Edelweiss+ Now Supports ONIX 3.0 and Thema Codes

Above the Treeline is pleased to announce that Edelweiss now supports ONIX 3.0 publisher files and international Thema codes.

The ONIX for Books Product Information Message is an international standard XML format widely used in the book trade across North America, Europe, and Asia.  ONIX provides publishers with a way to efficiently create and manage bibliographic metadata for titles and share it with customers electronically. This open standard format for exchanging title metadata is maintained and developed for global use by EDItEUR, with guidance from an international steering committee representing book trade professionals.

ONIX was first released in 2000, and version 2.1 was released in 2001. The standard was created to meet the need of the book industry to transmit rich information about titles and digital products across the supply chain consistently. While the value of ONIX was immediately recognized, broad implementation occurred over a number of years. ONIX 3.0 was actually released in 2009, but adoption is only now becoming more widespread across the publishing industry. Previous versions are beginning to be phased out as international publishers switch to ONIX 3.0.

ONIX 3.0 is a streamlined version of the standard that removes deprecated elements while offering enhanced attributes to better accommodate digital products, online marketing and sales, sales and distribution in international markets, products related to a single work, and more.

Above the Treeline is pleased to offer ONIX 3.0 capability to our publisher clients and will continue to support ONIX 2.1 for the foreseeable future. Regardless of whether publishers switch to ONIX 3.0, Edelweiss is now also able to process and display Thema categories, a supplemental standard of global subject codes!
